Course Overview:

The course focuses on implementing knowledge and skills related to underwater cutting and welding techniques such as oxygen-arc cutting, exothermic electrodes, and shielded metal arc welding.

Participants are introduced to the relevant materials, tools and the entire process of underwater welding, as well as the relevant safety requirements for such activities, in particular, safety for divers. The welding accessories, arc cutting tools, MAPP gas cutting and friction stud welding are also part of the course.

It is relevant both to technical and non-technical personnel practicing cutting and welding underwater sl. managers, engineers and applied scientists.

It is noted that the course has also familiarized learners with underwater NDT inspection techniques such as visual inspection and ultrasonic thickness gauging conducted by divers qualified in CSWIP.

Course Objectives:

Upon the successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:-

  • Have a very good background in underwater cutting and welding techniques.
  • Review & improve the underwater cutting techniques and be able to know the operation, requirements, advantages & disadvantages as well as the material consumption of oxygen-arc cutting technique.
  • Identify the electrode amperage & oxygen requirements of exothermic electrodes and understand the materials required for Kerie cable.
  • Learn the operation and materials used for the underwater shielded metal-arc cutting techniques.
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of underwater welding including the mechanical barriers, shielded metal-arc welding, wet welding, and shipbuilding materials.
  • List the materials used in underwater shielded metal-arc welding and be able to emphasize the procedures & techniques for underwater shielded metal-arc welding.
  • Identify the various underwater arc cutting and welding equipment used and be able to determine the different welding accessories applicable for underwater cutting and welding.
  • Recognize the importance of safety in underwater cutting and welding and be able to explain the general precautions for underwater cutting and welding.
  • Emphasize the importance of personal safety in diving using the diving dress.
  • Learn the underwater cutting equipment used and be able to demonstrate the procedure on cutting underwater with a thermic lance.
  • Know MAPP gas cutting, loss of voice communications, and friction stud welder.

Determine when mitigation is required and the appropriate mitigation methods to utilize including maintenance pigging, physical design changes, and operational modifications

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for technical and non-technical personnel dealing with underwater cutting & welding such as managers, engineers, administration, and supervision staff. Further, the course is important for applied scientists and technologists interested in underwater cutting & welding techniques.
